Machine to Machine (M2M) communications enables efficient, timely and relevant data transfer between machines, big and small. Such data are transferred through various types of networks and processed for efficient utilization of machines. M2M communication is used in a wide spectrum of industries: transportation, Supply chain and Logistics, Healthcare, Green Energy and Utility grids etc. Depending on the usage paradigm, M2M devices or end points take different forms and utilize different networks, including wireless networks. Typically, an M2M device is integrated (or attached) with the machine that is monitored. This device monitors key statistics about the machine and transmits data in a predetermined time interval. The data is collected in a back end system and processed for key information that can be used to enhance operation and utilization of the machine. Design of M2Mdevices differs from other wireless products design in aspects such as fault and error monitoring, environmental reliability, regular firmware updates and overall integration with machines.
